Why can't we eliminate conflicts

Dear User,
I understand how difficult and frustrating it can be to deal with conflicts. It seems like no matter how hard we try, conflicts never seem to go away completely. From a Buddhist perspective, conflicts arise from our attachment to our own views and beliefs. We become so attached to them that we start to see those who hold different views as enemies, rather than fellow sentient beings. This attachment to our own views and beliefs causes us to react with anger, hatred, and aggression, which only serves to perpetuate the conflict.
From a psychological perspective, conflicts arise from a variety of factors, including differences in personality, communication styles, and values. These differences can lead to misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and resentment, which can in turn lead to conflict. Additionally, conflicts can be fueled by larger societal and cultural factors, such as systemic oppression, inequality, and injustice.
While conflicts may never be completely eliminated, there are steps we can take to minimize their impact and work towards resolution. From a coaching perspective, I would suggest the following:
1. Practice empathy and active listening. When we truly listen to another person's perspective and seek to understand where they are coming from, we can begin to bridge the gap between our differing views.
2. Use "I" statements instead of "you" statements. When we focus on our own feelings and experiences, rather than blaming or attacking the other person, we can reduce defensiveness and create a more productive dialogue.
3. Look for common ground. Even if we disagree on certain points, there may be areas where we share similar values or goals. By focusing on these areas, we can find ways to work together and find solutions that benefit everyone.
4. Practice mindfulness and self-reflection. By becoming more aware of our own thoughts, emotions, and reactions, we can learn to recognize when we are becoming attached to our own views and beliefs. We can then take steps to let go of that attachment and approach conflicts with a more open mind.
5. Seek outside help if needed. Sometimes conflicts are too complex or emotionally charged for us to handle on our own. In these cases, it may be helpful to seek the guidance of a therapist, mediator, or other trained professional.
Remember, conflicts are a natural part of human interaction, but they don't have to consume us. By approaching conflicts with mindfulness, empathy, and a willingness to find common ground, we can work towards resolution and create more peaceful relationships.
