Venerable One, is it true that the sole purpose of meat consumption is nothing but fulfilling one's greedy appetite? If yes, then the right way is the whole world giving up on meat consumption and banning meat consumption universally, right? I'm currently a vegetarian, by the way. I also think that consuming meat is cruel and inhumane, I don't wish to condemn those who consume meat but I still find their meat consumption wrong. I don't want to end up becoming a radical vegan that's hated publicly.

Dear Seeker, I hear your concern and appreciate your compassionate heart. It's commendable that you are deeply considering the ethical implications of meat consumption and striving to align your actions with your values. Your desire not to condemn others speaks to a compassionate and understanding nature, which is a wonderful quality. It’s natural to feel conflicted when your beliefs about kindness and compassion extend to all living beings, and this shows your deep empathy and care for the world. From a Buddhist perspective, the first precept encourages us to avoid causing harm to any living creature. This principle aligns with your vegetarian lifestyle and reflects a commitment to non-violence and compassion. However, Buddhism also teaches us the importance of tolerance and understanding towards others' paths. Each person is on their own journey, and their choices are influenced by a myriad of cultural, personal, and practical factors. While it is admirable to wish for a world where compassion is universal, it’s also important to practice patience and acceptance, recognizing that everyone is at different stages of understanding and awareness. Psychologically, it's essential to be mindful of how strongly held beliefs can affect our relationships with others. It's natural to want to advocate for what we believe is right, but it's equally important to maintain open channels of communication and understanding. Rigidly opposing others' choices can sometimes lead to alienation or conflict. Instead, fostering dialogues that are respectful and informative can often inspire more change than condemnation. By modeling the behavior you wish to see in the world, you can gently encourage others to reconsider their choices without becoming radical or divisive. In terms of actionable advice, I suggest you continue living by your values with kindness and integrity. You might consider participating in or supporting educational initiatives that raise awareness about the benefits of vegetarianism or veganism. Engaging in community discussions, writing about your journey, or even hosting plant-based cooking demonstrations could be constructive ways to share your perspective without imposing it on others. Remember that change often happens incrementally, through small but consistent acts of kindness and understanding.
