安心

あんじん / Anjin

Anjin (安心) Meaning

Meaning

In Buddhist usage, anjin means "settled mind" or "peace of mind"—a heart that is steady and at rest. In Zen, though, it doesn't mean getting rid of anxiety by force. It points to a quieter discovery: when you go looking for the anxious mind, you can't actually find it anywhere, and that realization itself is a kind of peace.

Origin

The word is closely tied to a famous exchange between Bodhidharma, the monk traditionally regarded as the founder of Zen in China, and his student Huike. Huike pleaded, "My mind is not at peace. Please, Master, pacify it." Bodhidharma replied, "Bring me your mind, and I will pacify it for you." After a long search, Huike said, "I have looked for my mind, but I cannot find it." Bodhidharma answered, "There—I have pacified your mind." This story appears as Case 41 of the Gateless Gate (Mumonkan), a classic 13th-century collection of Zen koans, and is also recorded in earlier Chinese Zen histories such as the Jingde Record of the Transmission of the Lamp.

How it helps with everyday worries

When we're anxious—about a deadline, a strained relationship, or what the future holds—we often wrestle with our own minds, trying to force the worry to go away. But imagine someone gently saying, "Show me that anxiety. Put it right here." If you look closely, you may notice it isn't a solid thing at all. It's a stream of passing thoughts and bodily sensations, arising and changing moment by moment. Peace of mind may not mean every problem has been solved. It can simply mean you no longer have to chase the worry or fight it. The situation may stay the same, yet a little space opens up inside. From that space, it becomes easier to take the next small step calmly.

A small practice for today

The next time worry shows up, ask yourself once, "Where in my body is this feeling right now?" Then gently breathe toward that spot three times.
