行雲流水

こううんりゅうすい / Kōun Ryūsui

Kōun Ryūsui (行雲流水) Meaning

Meaning

"Moving clouds, flowing water." The phrase describes a way of living that, like clouds drifting across the sky or water running downstream, does not cling to any fixed shape or place. Because it holds no rigid form, it can respond freely and gracefully to whatever comes.

Origin

The expression is best known from a letter by Su Shi (also called Su Dongpo), a poet and statesman of China's Northern Song dynasty. Praising good writing, he said it should be like moving clouds and flowing water: having no fixed form from the start, going where it must go and stopping where it cannot help but stop. The image was later embraced in Zen; wandering trainee monks who travel in search of a teacher are called unsui, "cloud and water," a name said to echo this same picture.

How it helps with everyday worries

When a work plan falls apart or a relationship doesn't go the way we hoped, we tend to grip tightly to how things were supposed to be. But a cloud changes shape when the wind shifts, and water meeting a rock simply flows around it and keeps going. On a day when everything goes off schedule, instead of straining to force things back into their original shape, you might ask what the next possible step is within the current that's actually here. That small shift can loosen a surprising amount of inner tension. This is not the same as passively drifting. As Su Shi put it, there is a time to go and a time to stop. In the middle of anxiety about an uncertain future, or the empty space left after a loss, you don't have to settle every answer right now, yet you can still do today's small tasks with care. Clouds and water seem to show both at once: the softness of not clinging to form, and the quiet steadiness of never losing touch with the ground beneath you.

A small practice for today

Think of one thing that didn't go as planned today, and instead of asking how to restore it, write down just one next step that would let things keep flowing from here.
