心外無別法

しんげむべっぽう / Shinge Mubeppō

Shinge Mubeppō (心外無別法) Meaning

Meaning

Literally, "Outside the mind, there is no other dharma (truth, or thing)." Everything we experience reaches us through the mind, so our suffering and our peace are not located somewhere far away, but appear within how this mind works. It is not a claim that the world is unreal, but an invitation to look at where experience actually happens.

Origin

The phrase is widely known as a summary of the teaching of the Avatamsaka (Flower Garland) Sutra, a major Mahayana scripture, and is often quoted as part of a verse: "The three realms are one mind; outside the mind there is no other dharma; mind, Buddha, and beings are not different." The last line appears in a verse of the sixty-fascicle Chinese translation of the sutra, but the first half is not found there word for word and is generally regarded as a later condensation of the sutra's ideas. Zen teachers have often cited it to point out that awakening is not something to be sought outside oneself.

How it helps with everyday worries

When a harsh comment from your boss keeps replaying at night, it feels as if the words themselves are hurting you. Yet the one pressing replay, again and again, may be your own mind. This is not a reason to blame yourself. It simply means that some of what you are struggling with lies close enough to touch. You cannot undo what happened, but there is often a little room in how you carry it. Anxiety also sends us searching outward: a better job, someone who finally understands, a more certain future. Wanting those things is fine. But noticing that wherever you go, you bring the same mind with you can loosen the frantic searching a bit. This is not about dismissing real hardship as "all in your head." It is about gently looking at what you feel as something happening in your own mind, and starting from there.

A small practice for today

Bring to mind one thing that has been bothering you, and quietly separate "what happened" from "what I keep thinking about it." For one minute, just observe the second part without trying to fix it.
