遊戯三昧

ゆげざんまい / Yuge Zammai

Yuge Zammai (遊戯三昧) Meaning

Meaning

Yuge zammai describes a way of living freely and without attachment, completely absorbed in whatever one is doing. "Yuge" means play, but not in the sense of goofing off; it points to the way a child loses themselves in a game, forgetting gain, loss, and judgment. "Zammai" (samadhi) refers to a mind that is gathered and settled in one place.

Origin

The phrase appears in the Gateless Gate (Mumonkan), a 13th-century Chinese collection of Zen koans. In his comment on the first case, "Zhaozhou's Dog," the compiler Wumen Huikai writes that one who breaks through "gains great freedom at the edge of life and death, and moves through all realms of existence in the samadhi of play." The expression also appears in the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch, describing free, unhindered activity.

How it helps with everyday worries

When work becomes nothing but a list of obligations, the mind gets pulled toward outcomes and other people's opinions, and exhaustion follows. Yuge zammai doesn't mean taking your job lightly. It means stepping into each small task, writing one email, tidying one page, with the same full attention a child brings to building blocks. Often you discover that much of the strain came not from the task itself but from worrying about what comes next or how you'll be seen. On days when motivation is gone, insisting that you must do something meaningful only makes everything heavier. Washing a dish, walking to the station, writing a few words: try simply doing them, and letting them be what they are. Not trying to do them well, just becoming the movement itself. Over time, moments like these can open small spaces of freedom inside a crowded life.

A small practice for today

The next time you wash your hands, spend one minute giving your whole attention, playfully, to the warmth of the water and the feel of the soap.

Is something weighing on you, too?
