Greetings Buddha, Many reverences to you esteemed one 🙏🏽 I have been practicing meditation and employing wisdom and compassion for a long time in my daily life, however, mistakes from my past are haunting me and I feel the mental factor of guilt arising and passing by itself. I understand that the person who made those mistakes is no longer there from the principle of non-self, but what else can I do about the guilt?

Dear Seeker,
I offer my deepest compassion and understanding for the pain you are experiencing due to the haunting presence of guilt from your past mistakes. It is commendable that you have been practicing meditation and cultivating wisdom and compassion in your daily life. Recognizing that the person who made those mistakes is no longer the same as who you are now is a profound understanding derived from the principle of non-self.
From a Buddhist perspective, guilt arises from our attachment to the past and our identification with the actions we regret. It is crucial to remember that guilt, like all mental states, is impermanent and will naturally arise and pass away. Instead of resisting or suppressing these feelings, it can be helpful to embrace them with mindfulness and self-compassion. By acknowledging and accepting the guilt without judgment, we can begin to heal and transform it.
From a psychological perspective, guilt can serve as a signal that something within us needs attention and resolution. It is an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. Reflect on the lessons you have learned from those past mistakes and how they have shaped you into the person you are today. Use this understanding to fuel your commitment to living a more compassionate and mindful life.
In terms of coaching advice, I encourage you to engage in self-forgiveness. Understand that we are all fallible human beings who make mistakes. Holding onto guilt only perpetuates suffering and prevents your growth. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with kindness and understanding. Cultivate forgiveness towards yourself and others involved, recognizing that we are all on a journey of learning and growth.
Additionally, consider engaging in acts of kindness and service to others. By shifting your focus from self-blame to acts of love and compassion, you can create positive ripples that counterbalance the guilt within you. Engaging in meditation and mindfulness practices can also help you develop a greater sense of presence and acceptance, allowing you to let go of the past and embrace the present moment.
Remember, the past cannot be changed, but your relationship with it can be transformed. You have the power to break free from the chains of guilt and move forward on your path towards greater wisdom and compassion.
