It sounds like you had an unexpected and uncomfortable experience during what was meant to be a social and friendly evening. It's completely natural to feel uneasy when personal boundaries are crossed, especially when you're just trying to meet new people and have enjoyable conversations. Your feelings of discomfort are valid, and it's important to acknowledge them without judgment. These situations can often leave us questioning our own actions and intentions, which is a common response when faced with unexpected behavior from others. From a Buddhist perspective, it's important to remember the principle of mindfulness—being present and aware of your feelings without attaching blame to yourself. The situation you described is an opportunity to practice compassion towards yourself, recognizing that you were in a new environment and responded in a way that felt right at the moment. In Buddhism, we understand that all beings act based on their current understanding and conditions, and this applies both to you and the person who kissed you. Approaching this situation with compassion for both parties can help alleviate any lingering feelings of guilt or discomfort. Psychologically, it's essential to affirm that you did nothing wrong by expressing your boundaries after reflecting on the situation. It's a common human experience to feel conflicted about our responses, especially in social settings where we may feel pressured to act a certain way. The fact that you communicated your lack of interest the next day shows a healthy assertion of your boundaries. It’s important to remember that setting boundaries is a crucial part of maintaining your psychological well-being. For moving forward, consider practicing assertive communication by expressing your boundaries clearly and respectfully in the moment if similar situations arise. This could involve saying something like, "I prefer not to be kissed," which can prevent misunderstandings. Additionally, reflecting on your feelings and actions through journaling or meditation can provide clarity and reinforce your sense of self-awareness. Engaging in activities that build your confidence in social interactions, such as role-playing scenarios with friends or a coach, might also be beneficial.
